Two commuter ferries carrying over 150 passengers between them collided in the fog on the morning of June 10, amazingly resulting in only one minor injury.
The 101-foot Laura, bound for Hingam, ran into 88-foot Boston-bound Massachusetts, ripping a hole in the starboard side of the smaller boat and shaking up passengers. Passengers on the Massachusetts report seeing the Laura emerge suddenly from the fog shortly before the collision, bracing themselves and then feeling "a big jolt." One man suffered minor cuts, presumably from the glass of the window that the Laura shattered, but declined medical attention.
The collision was likely contributed to by the heavy fog, but both vessels should have had radars to inform them of other ships' positions. The collision is under investigation by the Coast Guard.
