The fishing vessel Nordic Viking ran hard aground about 25 miles south of Valdez, AL on July 21st. One of the vessel's fuel tanks was breached upon grounding, spilling up to 3,500 gallons of diesel fuel. All four members of the vessel's crew were transported safely to land by a Good Samaritan vessel as the Coast Guard and a local environmental cleanup company worked to contain the spill.

The cleanup efforts lasted until the 24th, and the oil sheen at one point was an estimated 5.75 miles long and 200 ft wide. No wildlife was reported impacted by the spill.

The cause of the grounding is still under investigation. Three of the crewmembers have cooperated with the Coast Guard investigation, but the skipper has refused standard drug and alcohol testing.
